How to Get Your Yard to Stand Out this Holiday Season

December 6, 2016

The holidays are almost here – and signs of the season are cropping up everywhere – including your neighbor’s yard! Making your yard and home look festive can be a huge undertaking – but we have some tips and tricks to help them stand out without costing a ton of time or money.

Many people love decorating their yard with Christmas lights and those giant blow-up yard ornaments. One fun way to illuminate your yard and create ambiance is with light-up Christmas ornaments. All it takes is some chicken wire and a few strings of lights. Create a large ball with the chicken wire, and then wrap the string of lights around the ball. Leave enough of a “tail” so you can plug it into an extension cord, and voila! Classy yet fun yard ornaments that are easy to unwrap and store once the season is over.

Another fun and easy way to decorate your yard is to create your own outdoor “Christmas tree.” First, choose a small to medium-sized evergreen tree. Next, string mini lights on both the interior and exterior branches to make the tree look more full. Finally, choose some light reflecting ornaments that can withstand the elements to really make the tree pop!

If you don’t have an evergreen in your yard, you can still create your own outdoor tree of lights! All you need is a basketball pole or another sturdy pole with a base and several strands of large C7 bulbs to start. Use outdoor hooks to attach the lights to the top of the pole, and secure in the ground with outdoor stakes or gutter hooks. Complete the look with a light up star attached at the top or a festive bow. To really make your light tree stand out, alternate the strands of lights with twinkling ones!

Topiaries and potted plants are another great way to dress up your yard or porch for the holidays. Mini evergreens in large planters can be easily dressed up with a festive plaid ribbons and pine cones for a rustic look. You could also string mini lights and small ornaments on the branches to make them look like tiny Christmas trees. Topiaries are a beautiful and classy way to dress up your porch or inside of your home. They can be trimmed into all sorts of fun holiday shapes – from stars to ornaments – and easily dressed up with bows and lights. Plus, when Christmas is over, you still have a beautiful plant to decorate with that lasts all year long!

Creating the Perfect Outdoor Oasis

November 18, 2016

outdoor-firepit-area-1Everyone needs a space to call their own, whether you use it to unwind after a long day, entertain friends and family, or play with your children. If you’re wondering where you could find that kind of space, look no further than your own backyard.

Before you can create the perfect outdoor oasis, you must first ask yourself some key questions to determine your needs.

•  What do you want the space to do?
•  How do you want to feel in the space?
•  Do you want it to serve several functions … or just one?

We can help you bring your vision for your backyard to life, from the “big picture” right down to the tiny details.

Consider how you want to use your outdoor space and what you want it to achieve for you. For example, let’s say you want to feel peaceful and relaxed in your backyard. What helps you feel that way? Is it hearing certain sounds, such as a waterfall, or watching different types of wildlife, such as butterflies or birds? We help you figure out what you need to create your ideal space and choose the best outdoor elements to complement it.

Also, think about if you want the space to be single use or multi purpose? We can create the right environment for your all of your needs through outdoor “rooms.” For example, we can create a serenity garden that allows you to relax, while building a separate space such as an outdoor kitchen and patio oasis to entertain your family and friends.

outddoor-kitchen1The key to uniting these seemingly different spaces is elegance! We can achieve this through the careful selection of plants as well as the style of hardscape. For example, we make sure that the different materials we use will blend together to achieve the look you want. If you want to achieve a modern look in your backyard, we may choose stone pavers for your patio, and use clean lines and sharp edges to give the space a contemporary feel. However, we would use softer lines and patterns to transition from an entertainment area to a meditation garden so things flow more smoothly. Remember, less is more!

Landscaping is an extension of your living space that just happens to be outside. Etowah can help bring your ultimate outdoor space to life! Call our Senior Landscape Architect Melda Duckworth for a consultation today – 678-354-0757.
